There’s something almost otherworldly about driving into Cathedral Grove for the first time. The road winds through Vancouver Island’s forest, and suddenly the trees begin to rise around you, impossibly tall and ancient, their trunks disappearing high above. Every time I return and walk beneath these towering giants, I’m reminded of just how small I am in their presence.
This original hand-drawn pointillism piece is my attempt to capture a little of that feeling on a much smaller scale. Each tree, shadow and subtle variation in texture has been built entirely by hand, with hundreds upon hundreds of tiny ink dots, each one deliberately placed to create depth, movement and detail.
There’s something special about translating something so immense into such a small piece of artwork. What takes moments to pass through by car can take countless hours to recreate by hand, one tiny dot at a time. The result is a quiet, intricate reminder of the feeling I have every time I find myself beneath these incredible old-growth giants.
