Mount Baker / Kulshan

For those of us who call the Pacific Northwest home, Mount Baker is more than a mountain on the horizon. Rising above the North Cascades, this enormous snow-covered peak has a way of making itself known from remarkably far away. From across the waters and landscapes of British Columbia to communities throughout Washington, its familiar silhouette can appear hundreds of miles from where it stands, quietly anchoring the horizon.

Known by the Indigenous name Kulshan, Mount Baker is part of the Cascade Range, a vast chain of mountains stretching from Northern California through British Columbia. (National Park Service) There is something particularly special about seeing it from BC and Washington, knowing that the same mountain has watched over these landscapes long before the borders that divide them existed.

This original piece is my hand-drawn interpretation of that view, created entirely through my fine-line pointillism technique. Every mountain ridge, shadow, snowfield and subtle texture is built from hundreds upon hundreds of individually placed ink dots. Each dot is deliberately positioned to create depth, light and dimension, slowly bringing an immense landscape into focus on a much smaller scale.

I love the contrast of this process. A mountain so enormous that it can dominate the horizon from miles away is reduced to thousands of tiny marks beneath my hand. What looks simple from a distance reveals layer after layer of meticulous detail when viewed up close.

A small, quiet interpretation of a mountain that has always felt anything but small.
